North American Standard for Municipal and Industrial Compostability

Independently verified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI) to be industrially compostable in compliance with ASTM D6400.

To meet this standard, a product must pass the following tests:

  • Chemical Characterisation Test – no heavy metals present above the minute levels specified by the standard.
  • Aerobic Biodegradability Test – completely biodegrade within 6 months in a controlled lab test.
  • Quantitative Disintegration Test – disintegrate within 12 weeks in a composting facility.
  • Ecotoxicity Test – no adverse effect on plant germination or growth.

Australian Standard for Commercial Compostability

Independently verified by the Australian Bioplastics Association to be commercially compostable in compliance with AS4736.

To meet this standard, a product must pass the following tests:

  • Chemical Characterisation Test – no heavy metals present above the minute levels specified by the standard.
  • Aerobic Biodegradability Test – completely biodegrade within 6 months in a controlled lab test.
  • Quantitative Disintegration Test – disintegrate within 3 months in compost.
  • Ecotoxicity Plant & Worm Test – no toxic effect on plants (germination & growth) and earthworms.

Australian Standard for Home Compostability

Independently verified by the Australian Bioplastics Association (ABA) to be home compostable in compliance with AS5810. This standard is even more stringent and difficult to meet than the commercially compostable standard due to the more variable conditions of home composts.

To meet this standard, a product must pass the following tests:

  • Chemical Characterisation Test – no heavy metals present above the minute levels specified by the standard.
  • Aerobic Biodegradability Test – completely biodegrade within 12 months in a controlled lab test.
  • Quantitative Disintegration Test – disintegrate within 6 months in compost.
  • Ecotoxicity Plant & Worm Test – no toxic effect on plants (germination & growth) and earthworms.
